2006 Building Excellence Award
This project consists of updating a tired mid-90’s oak on oak kitchen in a home on acreage near the Lewis River. The challenges were to improve the look, add natural light and increase functionality in a large, but not very well laid out kitchen. We did this by enlarging two existing corner windows near the corner sink and adding another window, reorienting the island and taking the range from the island to the adjacent wall and doing away with a seldom used clutter collecting desk and replacing it with a beautiful built-in hutch. The new custom cherry shaker style cabinets go to the 9’ ceiling and have a large two piece crown molding. The recessed lighting features clear alzak trims. There are stainless appliances including a Viking 6-burner range. An under-mount prep sink on the island with an insta-hot. Granite slab countertops and backsplash - including a full height backsplash behind the range. The hardwood floors were restored due to some water damage and completely refinished throughout the main floor living areas.
The use of wood and stone bring a very natural and upscale feel to the kitchen. Details such as connecting the cherry wood from the kitchen to the hutch and over to the wet bar bring unity to the space beyond the kitchen.
Often it is challenging to take a large kitchen and make it functional- so that the people using the kitchen have what they need within a reasonable distance. This kitchen now will accommodate several people at once for cooking, prepping, cleaning or just conversing with those doing any of the above. The materials used will not go out of style as they are timeless. The original kitchen was poorly laid out and used materials that were dated soon after the house was finished. We are confident that the new kitchen will stand the test of time.
